Francisco Timóteo

My practice concerns the relation between humans and Nature, our relative insignificance and vulnerability. I am absolutely fascinated by the Cosmos and by the big questions it implies. The Overview Effect is at the core of my project. As Frank White puts it, “The Overview Effect is a shift in worldview reported by astronauts and cosmonauts during spaceflight. (…) the experience of seeing first-hand the reality that Earth is in space, a tiny, fragile ball of life, hanging in the void.” (White, 2021)

Even though I have never been to space, I have felt this effect on a few key moments of my life. A “feeling of awe, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.” (ibid.)

Rothko and Turrell are two of my main influences. Their works, mysterious and deceptively simple have encouraged my engagement with
paint and light. However, I am currently exploring a variety of different mediums, seeing these experiments as within the expanded field of
painting. I use a minimalist and abstract visual language, simple compositions and colours, to intensify human emotion through a powerful perceptual experience. Keenly interested in the science of the Cosmos, my works’ titles often relate to this area, e.g.: Singularity, Black Hole.

To quote Albert Einstein, “The most beautiful thing we can experienceis the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.” (Einstein, 1931)
